Why You Should Never Include References on a Resume + What to Do Instead

Why You Should Never Include References on a Resume + What to Do Instead Spread the loveResumes and references are both common requests when youre applying for jobs, but that doesnt mean you should put your references on your resume. Your resume is all about you: what youve done, what youre capable of, and how to contact you. Its not necessary (or advisable) to put information for someone else on your resume. Why?Adding references on a resume is outdated and unprofessional. An employer expects you to have references, but that comes into play later in the hiring process. Employers will usually ask for references later in the interview stage or before they make an offer. Keep your list of references ready; just keep it off your resume.Another reason you shouldnt list references is because most companies use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS ) to scan your resume. Some ATS are programmed to email your references automatically and your application stays invalid until they respond. If this happens and your references dont respond, your resume wont ever be seen a nd youd never know. Check out this guide to ensure your resume gets past the Applicant Tracking Systems over 90% of employers use. When should you include references on a resume? You should never include references on a resume or a cover letter. Your references should be a separate page. The only time you should include a reference page with your resume is if the listing asks for one. You will find that most jobs don’t; however, always double-check the instructions as to what the employer wants you to submit. How should you list your references?Your reference sheet should contain three to four professional references. You should always give your references a heads up before you hand in your reference sheet. The last thing you want is for your references to be caught off guard or even give an old number or email address. Ensure that the contact number and email is up to date for each of your references.(We wrote a great post on how a resume reference pageshould look like).Should you in clude references on a cover letter? No, you should never include references in a cover letter. If the employer asks for references, include them on a separate references page. Will the employer call the reference? There is no way to know whether an employer will reach out to your references. Just be sure that your references are aware that they may be contacted. Figure that there is a 50/50 chance that the employer will actually call.We wrote a good post here on exactly what they ask your references when they do call.So to sum it up under no circumstance should you include references or “references available upon request” on a cover letter or resume. Have a reference sheet ready if the employer asks for one and always give your references a heads up that they may receive a call. Good luck with your job search and don’t forget that Zipjob provides expert resume services. You can even get a Free Review Here.

4 Ways to Get Your Partner to be a More Active Parent

4 Ways to Get Your Partner to be a More Active Parent You didnt get up as early as you had planned. Your child, who is perfectly capable of getting dressed alone, insists on having your help. You have 15 minutes before you have to leave the house but your hands are full making lunch and youre mucksmuschenstill not dressed. Wouldnt it be great if your partner got away from work emails to ask if there was anything s/he could do to help? Youre not alone. Many parents wish their partner were involved. But dont worry. Here are four things you can do to get your partner to be a mora active parent.1.Communicate Your Needs ProperlyMuttering resentful statements under your breath, while easy to do in the heat of the moment, will only exacerbate the situation and frustrate you further. zupflmmel a calm time to talk to your partner about why their active participation is not only important to you but to your child. You want your child to have strong bonds with both of you and for both of you to serve as role models. Then pause and resist the urge to give them a list of all the things they should do but dont. Turning this conversation into a scorecard of who does mora or has more stress wont do anyone any good. Instead start from a point of agreement that having two involved and active parents is a shared vision. Then ask your partner for ideas on how s/he could be more active.2. Give Everyone a Job to DoMornings seem to be the fruchtwein stressful times for families. Everyones rushing to get themselves ready for the day. One of the best things we did in our home was to give everyone a morning job to accomplish. Dad makes breakfast, our child packs his bag and sets the table and mom makes lunch. Admittedly sometimes things get in the way of our routine. But when we stick to this a few things happen. We were all more organized. But most importantly, we were working together as a family, which made our mornings more harmonious. It was clear our five-year-old really appreciat ed it and enjoyed the responsibility. I certainly appreciated the order it created.3. Use Positive ReinforcementBehavior modification works at any age. Give your partner the same type of positive reinforcement you give to your child for behaviors you want to encourage. We are so used to commenting on things we dont like or appreciate from our partners that its easy to gloss over the things they do well. When you notice your partner being more active, its important to acknowledge it and show your appreciation. Let them know how much even a simple or small gesture meant to you. Its easy to make the mistake of letting it go because you think its a given that this is what they should do. Remember youll always catch more flies with honey.4. Work Towards an Earned Goal Together. It may sound silly but make a game out of it if thats what it takes. Put a quarter in a jar every time you each do something positive around an identified behavior. Or create a sticker chart and give each other sti ckers when appropriate. When youve filled out a page of stickers or you reach a certain amount in the jar, go out and celebrate.Parenting is no easy task. Parenting with someone you feel is not on the same page as you, makes it even harder. The more levity you can bring to doing it together without criticism the better. No big leaps are made without small steps first. But by being encouraging, supportive and open, you may see great change in even the most stubborn of partners.

Too Pretty for the Job

Too Pretty for the Job I read an interesting article about a woman, Nan Boland, who decided to open her own recruiting firm. Aleidher woman-owned business in the recruitment field? Nice. But what really interested me was what Boland said about the makeup of her staffYou know, its great. And interestingly, right now we have all females in our office, although that is not by design. Women in general are very strong individuals, but anyone can be successful in owning his or her own business, its just a matter of how hard you work and the good people you surround yourself with. I have a fantastic team. Im not doing this alone, but I have a wonderful team and a business manager that has been with me since day one. I cannot take all the credit for my companys success, because its been a great team effort. Ive been blessed to have great relationships with our clients and candidates, too.A woman-owned, 10 0 percent women-operated recruitment firm? Very niceand very unique. This unique setup particularly interested me because I remember reading a Forbes.com article about how women HR professionals often discriminate against attractive female job seekers. The article explained how two Isreali researchersBradley Ruffle at Ben-Gurion University and Zeev Shtudiner at Ariel University Centresent out fake applications to 2,500 job openings. The researchers sent two applications to each job one application included a photo and the other did not. The two believed that resumes including photos of attractive candidates would receive the greatest response. This was partially true. Although attractive males received more callbacks for interviews than unattractive males, attractive women were less likely to get a callback for an interview if they attached a photo. Why the discrepancy? The researchers concludedHuman resources departments tend to be staffed mostly by women. Indeed, in the Israeli study, 93% of those tasked with selecting whom to invite for an interview were female. The researchers unavoidableand unpalatableconclusion is that old-fashioned jealousy led the women to discriminate against pretty candidates.Ladies, is this true? Now, when first reading about the experiment, one might assume attractive women were ruled out because of the unfair dumb blonde or dumb model generalizations. Yet, each photo in the study was also rated on how intelligent people thought the person looked and the results showed that there was no correlation between ones beauty and ones intelligence level(s).Are women HR professionals really discriminating against female job seekers? If so, this is really disconcerting. Why you ask? Well, look at the stats about women in the workforce (and, ladies let me tell you, theyre not pretty)Only 4.2 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs are womenWomen make up 4.5 percent of Fortune 1000 CEO positionsIn 2012just like in 2002among full-time, year-round workers, women were paid 77 percent of what men were paid.Women only held 16.6 percent of Fortune 500 board seatsIn 2011, at 31.9 percent, women didnt even account for half of all lawyersFrom elementary and middle school teachers to computer programmers, women are paid less than men in female-dominated, gender-balanced, and male-dominated occupations (AAUW)What am I saying? Ladies, its clear that we need one another. Although more and more women (and mothers) are entering the workforce, we still face many inequalities compared to our male counterparts. Instead of being jealous and discriminating against each other, we need to unite and continue to advocate for change and equality. It may sound clich, but the phrase, United we stand, divided we fall, is very true. Being jealous and unfair toward attractive women only harms women in the workforce overall. Instead of preventing women from entering a company, why not be fair in your selection process? View the female job seekers not as threats, but po sitively as more potential women who can add to those lists of CEOs and board members and ultimately help turn our male-dominated, senior-level workforce into an equal and level playing field.
